This course will enable you to develop the particular skills and methods required for successful mediation and conflict management, including both conflict resolution and conflict avoidance.

The skills for effective mediation are similar to those required for successful counselling.

The course therefore employs well-proven psychotherapy and counselling techniques as part of the training programme.

Two training options are available:

  • A four-day course resulting in a Certificate in Mediation
  • A five-day course leading to Accredited Mediator status

Two training options are available: a four-day course resulting in a Certificate in Mediation, and a five-day course resulting in Accredited Mediator status.

The course includes lectures, training skills sessions with exercises and demonstrations, and numerous mediation role plays under supervision.

You will learn through experience, developing your skills through mock mediations, together with periods of feedback and discussion within each session.

The four-day course provides a comprehensive framework containing all the knowledge, skills and techniques you will need for mediation. Successful participants receive a Certificate in Mediation.

The five-day course adds an assessment day and provides successful students with an official accreditation, allowing you to be referred to as a fully 'Accredited (RSPP) Mediator'.

Accreditation and recognition
Those successful on the five-day course will achieve official accreditation granted by RSPP, recognised and approved by:

  • The Law Society for the purposes of entitling the School’s accredited (solicitor) mediators to join the Law Society’s Civil/Commercial Mediation Panel
  • The Law Society and The Bar Council as continuing professional development (four-day course: 32 CPD hours; five-day course: 33 CPD hours (Bar Council); 40 CPD hours (Law Society))
  • The Legal Services Commission as a Mediator Course Provider in the Funding Code Manual (entitles our accredited mediators to Funding Assistance (Legal Aid))

Bespoke mediation courses

Refresher courses
Refresher courses for accredited mediators and those wishing to complete their accreditation are available and consist of a one-day course, with a group of usually 4-6 participants.

Study methods

All 5-day courses start on a Friday, and then continue on Saturday and the following Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The course combines lectures with training skills sessions, exercises and demonstrations, as well as many supervised mediation role-plays.

You will learn through experience, developing your skills through mock mediations, together with periods of feedback and discussion within each session.

Assessment is on a continual basis, with a final assessment in the last two sessions (the final day). You will receive the criteria for assessment at the start of the course.

 

Assessment structure

At the end of the course, you will be asked to complete and return a self-assessment, together with drafting a Heads of Agreement document, prior to our final assessment of your competence and effectiveness as a mediator.

Any participant who is considered not to have reached the required standard of competence will be offered the opportunity to attend a one-day refresher course, at the conclusion of which they will be re-assessed.

 

Course Outline

Days 1 and 2: Building Trust and Rapport

The days comprise a mix of Lectures, Training Skills, with exercises and demonstrations; and Mediation Role plays, under supervision, and group plenary discussions.

Days 3, 4, and 5: Strategic Conflict Resolution

These days concentrate upon mock mediations, with ample periods of feedback and discussion, both within each session, as well as group discussions.

 

The course is limited to 16 participants so that each delegate acts as the Mediator in no less than 5 cases, and participates in no less than 20 mediation role play case-studies, of which 16 are approximately 1 hour duration, and the last 4 are 90 minutes each. The case studies are based upon classic English law “chestnut” legal cases, with a number of added case studies to illustrate further conflict situations. The case studies cover a range conflict situations, including commercial, employment, workplace, family property, community and cross-border disputes.

You will receive advice while on the course as to how you can find work afterwards.

We will put in you touch mediation provider organisations that you will be eligible to join. These organisations may charge an annual fee in order to place you on their panels of mediators. When they receive an inquiry for a mediator, they search their panel database and match the most appropriate mediator to the dispute.

Regent's University London has made arrangements with providers of mediation work throughout the UK, such as ADR Group, Talk Mediation, InterResolve, and CALM (Confidential & Local Mediation), a voluntary organisation specialising in London Local Authority mediations.

Fees 2017/18:

£3,500 (not subject to VAT) for the 4-day mediation skills course

Terms & Conditions

  • Please note that a 10% booking deposit applies to this course.
  • The course fee includes lunch, refreshments and a copy of the book Mediation: A Psychological Insight into Conflict Resolution by F.Strasser and P.Randolph.
  • An invoice for the course fees will be sent to you upon receipt of the application form. Fees are payable prior to the commencement of the course.
  • The full course fee is payable unless a booking is cancelled not less than 10 working days before the course is due to commence. Any cancellation will be subject to a charge or retention of £175. Substitutions are permitted up to the commencement of the course.
  • We reserve the right to cancel the course if, in our opinion, there are insufficient enrolments.
